Integrated Voice-to-Voice Text System for IntérPretes (VIP)
The University Institute for Research in Multilingual Linguistic Technologies (IUITLM) is one of the centers of excellence dedicated to scientific and technical research of the University of Malaga, which aims, among others, to offer consulting, mediation and remote interpretation services and to develop linguistic software products.
The IUITLM has an interdisciplinary character, since it has groups from different branches of knowledge (Humanities, Information and Communication Technologies, Social Sciences, Economics and Law, Biology and Biotechnology, and Psychology).
We are interested in establishing contacts with companies related to i) translation and interpretation and ii) language academies and language teaching.
VIP is a modular system that is primarily developed to assist the interpreter in all phases of the interpreting process (beforehand through documentation, during the interpreting itself, and in the subsequent phase when the material that may be of interest for the next interpretation is reorganized and rearranged).
Moreover, given the set of functionalities grouped in the VIP system, categorized in four packages (CORPUS, GLOSSARY, COMPLEMENTARY and TRAINING), it is possible to carry out the (semi)automatic compilation of corpus of enormous dimensions, create and consult glossaries, extract terminology, practice exercises, etc. Therefore, the VIP system can be of great interest in language teaching, both in language academies and language schools as well as in universities.
The system currently works in five languages: Spanish, English, French, French, Italian and German. In addition, it is expected to work for Chinese and Arabic in the near future.
The collaborator must present a technological need, either at a professional level (lack of technological tools to apply in interpreting) or at an educational level (providing a technological resource to students).
– Professional translators and interpreters.
– Translation and interpretation companies.
– Academies and language schools.
The VIP system is a technological tool that brings together in a work environment a set of functionalities that facilitate the work of interpreting from a technological point of view, unlike the rest of the technological tools for interpreting that, although they are available on the market, offer the functionalities that the VIP system integrates in isolation (for example, voice-to-text converters, unit converters, terminology managers, etc.).
